BURKE’S CANOE TRIPS
Canoe the Russian River! Burke’s Canoes is located 12 miles away. Pick up your canoe and enter the water there and head downriver for about 10 miles. It’s a leisurely paddle and there are lots of gravel beaches where you can stop for a picnic or a swim. The river will pick you up about a mile from town and take you back to your car! Don’t forget sunscreen. Note: They are open only during the summer months. Cost about $60 for a canoe for the day.
JOHNSON’S BEACH
A Russian River tradition for nearly a century, Johnson’s Beach is a favorite summer spot for Sonoma County locals and visitors alike. Swimming, sunning and floating on the Guerneville beach is as much a Sonoma County pastime as wine tasting and strolling through the redwoods. Located midway between the historic towns of Guerneville and Monte Rio in the charming and eclectic town of Guerneville, this classic summer getaway sits in the heart of the Russian River Valley and provides the quintessential summertime river experience.

MONTE RIO BEACH
Monte Rio Beach is the largest public beach on the lower Russian River and is ADA accessible. It is east of the Monte Rio Bridge and known locally as Big Rocky Beach. It is the location of the Independence weekend children’s games organized under the banner of Big Rocky Games. A lighted boat flotilla and fireworks follow for an old-fashioned family experience.
Enjoy the serenity of this part of the Russian River and rent a canoe, paddle board or kayak (visit monterioparks.com). This is a great place to learn water sports but it’s also challenging enough to attract the advanced paddler.
Their food concession stand is stocked with cold drinks, ice cream and lunchable items. Volleyball courts and horseshoe pits are free to anyone who wishes to play. The parking lot is only open during the regular season and closes at 8pm. Built-in barbecue areas overlook the beauty and grandeur of the redwood covered hills across the river.
