Our History
BOON HOTEL + SPA began with a vision: to create a welcoming boutique hotel in Guerneville that blends modern design with the natural beauty of the Russian River Valley.
Long before BOON existed, this hillside was home to Guerneville’s mercury mining community. In the 1970s the land was purchased by an industrious owner who built the first generation of the hotel. In 1981 the property was extensively renovated, a pool was added, and it reopened as Paradise Cove, becoming a sunny retreat for travelers exploring the charm of Guerneville. In 2001 the hotel changed hands again and became the Retreat Resort & Spa.
Through each chapter the property continued to serve as a peaceful escape along the Russian River. But after the dot-com downturn, the area experienced a quieter moment. In the summer of 2007, owner and visionary Crista Luedtke saw something more in the property — not simply what it was, but what it could become. She believed the hotel could once again be a gathering place for travelers seeking rest, nature, and connection. In April 2008, BOON HOTEL + SPA was born.
Rather than replacing the past, the transformation honored it. The goal was not flashy new construction, but a thoughtful reimagining — preserving the character of the property while introducing modern rustic design, simple lines, sustainability, and a welcoming spirit.
Since opening as BOON HOTEL + SPA in 2008, the hotel has embraced a philosophy rooted in design, inclusivity, and genuine hospitality. The result is a relaxed, LGBTQ-friendly boutique hotel where guests can slow down, reconnect with nature, and experience the easy rhythm of the Russian River Valley.

The Namesake
Before Boon was a hotel, Boon was a dog. Boon, the hotel’s namesake, was a beloved black-and-white rescue known for his joyful spirit and talent for welcoming guests. Most days you’d find him poolside, chasing a frisbee, rolling in the grass, or happily guiding newcomers toward reception. Though Boon passed in 2019, his easygoing presence remains part of the soul of the property.
